OFHS ART STUDENTS EARN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF AWARDS

The OFHS Visual Arts Department is proud to share that 35 individual pieces have earned a total of 40 awards this school year. Each year more than 77,000 students in grades 7-12 participate in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. This process begins across the country as young artists submit more than 100,000 creative works or art and writing to a network of Regional Affiliate that locally present the Awards. This year 18 OFHS students in grades 10-12 earned a total of 25 awards. Earning a Gold Key was Jessica Bobik, Victoria Hartline, and Jessica Kukura. Earning a Silver Key was Jessica Bobik, Sarah Fissel, CarraGarlitz, Victoria Hartline, Jessica Kukura, Emmy Olszewski, Andrew Oltmanns, Teresa Wang, and Shaun Zeno. Earning Honorable Mention was Jessica Bobik, Olivia Collins, Dominic Dulin, Sarah Fissel, Brian Grove, Emilio Irizarry, Jessica Kukura, Kathryn Lesiak, Lauren Palkovic, Katie Tvorik, Jenna Yanchak, and Shaun Zeno

Launched in 2005, eXpressions is an interdisciplinary initiative that utilizes creativity to engage high school students in the world of scientific research. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning, students produce interpretations of research studies conducted by Clevelend Clinic science interns. This past fall, 34 high schools from 13 countries submitted 1,196 paintings, poems, sculpture, videos, essays, and short stories as a part of eXpressions. Less than 10% of these entries were selected for special regional recognition. OFHS was lucky enough to have 2 students have their work accepted into the show. Senior Kate Ferster created a piece in response to the research of OFHS senior Jordan Rieke which was titled, "The Influence of Arterial Lines on the Management of Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH) During Medical Transport". Senior Josh Musial created a piece in response to the research of intern Briana Makadia titled "The Emotive Impact of Words on Patients".

Around 1300 pieces were entered in Northeast Ohio for the regional judging for the Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition. OFHS has 13 works by 7 students. Those students are: Jessica Bobik, Brian Grove, Stormie Kadar (Top 25 in Region), Kacey Kovacs, Jessica Kukura, Kayla Nock, Emmy Olszewski, Holly Taylor, and Shaun Zeno. OFHS/Polaris student Rachael Krantz also had 2 photographs selected for regional recognition. All of these pieces were then taken to Columbus the following weekend for the state level judging. Over 3000 pieces were judged to fill 300 spots in the show. OFHS junior Jessica Kukura's photograph, "Smile," was one of the 300 pieces chosen for the state show. Her piece will be displayed at James A. Rhodes State Tower from April 13-May 15.

Congratulations to all of these students on their awards and honors! Come and see these works plus many more at the OFHS May Show on Friday May 16, 2014. The show runs from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. in the main gym at OFHS.
